Today with Cllr. Sheila Clarke I attended the AGM of Home-Start Wirral. The event was at Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight.  Home-Start is an organisation that offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children.  It is run by volunteers who are parents themselves.  The volunteers support families visiting them in their own homes.  The service focuses on parents with children under 5 years.

The organisation has their offices in Argyle Street, Birkenhead, but covers the Wirral area.  They accept referrals for help from Health Visitors, Childrens Centres, Social Care and from parents themselves.  They also offer a comprehensive Breastfeeding Peer Support Scheme.  A high standard of training is offered to the volunteers, and all aspects are carefully monitored for best practice.

The morning was very entertaining with singing from the pupils of Priory Parish School.  There were short presentations from the Chair, Dr. Jonathan Gibbs, the scheme manager, Bev Morgan, Childrens Centre Team Leader Kath Lloyd, and Alison McGovern MP.  There were very thought provoking presentations from a Dad who has received help from Home-Start, a volunteer who has had nine children herself, and the main speaker Simon Ward, an educational psychologist.

Further details of the service can be obtained on 0151 647 8369 or http://www.homestartwirral.co.uk
