Last night with Councillor Ian Lewis I attended the AGM of the Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse, at the Lighthouse. Shamefully this is the first time I have been to the Lighthouse even though I have lived here for 52 years. Now I now how good it is I will certainly be supporting it. I joined the Friends group last night. They have many exhibitions about the hovercraft service which ran from Moreton to Rhyl in 1962, the world’s first passenger service. I do have a picture of me by the hovercraft aged 5, so I nearly did get to the lighthouse!

After the usual reports the meeting was addressed by Ian Brand, Head of Asset Management for Wirral Borough Council. After introductions with Ian we realised that we had previously met, at school in 1969! Ian described the asset transfer plans which if successful would give the Lighthouse to the friend’s group. There were many interesting questions raised, and there is still a long way to go, however the council hopes for all asset transfers to be finalised by January 2011.

Now finally having visited the Lighthouse I am keen to make sure that this historic landmark is properly preserved and maintained. They even mentioned me abseiling down it, which Ian Lewis has done, but watching his facial expression when he described it, I don’t think it’s for me.
