Today I spent a pleasant afternoon at a Fundraising Tea Dance at Moreton Community Centre with my colleague Cllr Chris Blakeley. It had been organised by Addy from the Age Concern Shop in Moreton. Over 200 attended and all seemed to have a great time. There was a buffet and dancing to a Disco. As I had been to my chiropracter this morning I had to concentrate on the buffet rather than the dancing. There was a draw and over £600 in total was raised.

It was good to see that Age Concern have brought an event like this to Moreton because far too often this type of event is held in Birkenhead or Wallasey, with Moreton being left out. Thanks to Addy and all the donators who freely gave the community centre, disco, food and draw prizes.

They will be installing ‘Centre Line’ markings from the Millhouse Pub to Tanworth Grove, providing ‘Slow Signage’ on the carriageway and junction markings on some of the side roads, and will continue to review the problems. The police will also monitor the situation and take any necessary action that is needed.

I thank all residents who signed the petition, those who attended the public meetings and those who wrote, emailed and telephoned with their views. Let’s work together to get the roads safer.

Yesterday was the Centenary Celebration of Wallasey becoming a Borough. The event was hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral and the guest of honour was Dame Lorna Muirhead, who is the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside. After presentations in the Town Hall we watched a fascinating film of Wallasey in the 50′s and 60′s. We listened to a fanfare for Wallasey played by Wallasey schoolchildren, especially written for this occasion by Oldershaw’s head of Music, Philip McGinity.

We were then taken on a restored Wallasey Borough Bus to Church Street near to the junction with Brighton Street where Dame Lorna unveiled a plaque commemorating the original Town Hall which had stood at this location.

A very interesting morning bringing back lots of nostalgia. The one sad point was that even though the film was very old, I could remember a lot of the things in it!

For five years a project called ‘Soundsteps’ has been running providing a wide range of musical projects for people aged 13 -19 years. The concert featured 2 hours of excellent singing with the students accompanied by some member of the Greg Williams Big Band.
